Chapter Thirty

Sasha’s footsteps faltered as she entered the familiar confines of her home. A sense of unease settled in her chest, a premonition of something amiss. As she walked into the living room, her heart sank at the sight that greeted her. Lindsay was waiting for her, her posture rigid and her expression inscrutable.

A knot of anxiety formed in Sasha’s stomach. ‘Mum, are you all right?’

Lindsay’s gaze met Sasha’s, bereft of the maternal warmth it should have held. ‘Sit down.’

Sasha sank into a chair, her palms growing clammy. She had experienced her fair share of uncomfortable conversations with her mother, but this time, the tension was almost suffocating.

Lindsay cleared her throat, her voice uncharacteristically sombre. ‘Sasha, there’s something we need to discuss.’

Sasha's forehead creased in a frown. ‘What is it?’

‘Hailey.’

‘Hailey? What about her?’

A heavy sigh escaped Lindsay’s lips. ‘I’ve been thinking about this for a while now … and I think it’s for the best that Hailey moves out.’

Sasha’s heart plummeted. ‘What? No, Mum, you can’t be serious.’

‘I’m very serious, Sasha. Her presence here has disrupted our family dynamic. It’s time for things to go back to normal.’

‘But this is normal, Mum. Hailey is a part of our lives now. She’s not disrupting anything.’

Lindsay’s tone turned icy. ‘Sasha, this is my home, and I decide who lives here, not you.’

Tears welled up in Sasha’s eyes. ‘You don’t understand. Hailey is special to me, I—’

‘I couldn’t care less. She’s going and that’s the end of it.’

Lindsay’s indifference was a painful blow, her lack of empathy cutting deep.

‘Please don’t do this, Mum. Please.’

‘Life isn’t about what we want, Sasha. It’s about making tough decisions for the greater good.’

Sasha’s tears spilled over, her voice breaking as she pleaded, ‘Can you just give it a few more days to think about it?’

‘No, and that’s final.’

The front door opened and closed with a thud and Hailey’s voice soon echoed through the hallway.

‘Hey, I’m home!’

Sasha wiped away her tears and said in a hushed voice, ‘If you kick Hailey out, then I’m going with her.’

Lindsay’s expression remained unchanged, her eyes cold and calculating. ‘And what about Chloe?’

Sasha’s breath caught in her throat, the mention of her younger sister a painful reminder of the responsibilities she bore.

‘Chloe … she’ll be okay. I’ll make sure she’s taken care of.’

‘If you leave, I will have to put Chloe up for adoption. Is that what you want?’

Sasha’s heart raced, torn between her love for Hailey and her duty towards her sister.

As Hailey’s footsteps drew nearer, Sasha’s gaze locked with Lindsay’s one final time. In that moment, she saw the void of empathy and the selfishness that defined her mother.

As Hailey entered the room, Sasha’s heartache was mirrored in her tear-filled eyes.

‘Is everything okay?’

‘No, it isn’t,’ Sasha said.

She didn’t have the heart to tell Hailey that she was facing an impossible choice, one that threatened to tear them apart.
